Beijing Visa
You will need a Visa to travel to Beijing and you must apply for one. There are many different types of visas issued depending on the reason and length of your stay in the host country. In general a visa is the stamp of approval on a valid passport or other travel documents as may be required by the host country. It is a legal requirement and its purpose is to allow countries to determine who and why visitors wish to enter its borders.
A passport is issued by your citizen country for the purpose of international travel to identify name, date of birth, sex, and place of birth. The passport alone does not entitle the traveller to enter the destination country.
Most countries in the world have their own issuing agencies. It is best to contact the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. for very detailed information about the requirements for travel to Beijing. In October 2007 the Ministry of Public Security of China adopted new arrival and departure cards for foreign visitors. Entry rules and requirements do change over time and so you need to make sure that your application to enter the country meets all of the criteria for your Beijing visit.
